Not All Flooring Contractors Are Created Equal
Hiring the wrong flooring contractor costs more than money. It costs downtime, rework, safety incidents, and years of headaches from a floor that fails prematurely. The right contractor delivers a floor that performs for decades. Here are the seven questions that separate the professionals from the pretenders.
1. What Is Your Experience with This Specific System?
There is a massive difference between a contractor who has installed ten epoxy floors and one who has installed thousands. Ask for project references that match your specific application. A food-grade flooring installation requires completely different expertise than a warehouse epoxy coating.
2. Do You Perform Your Own Surface Preparation?
Surface preparation is 80 percent of a successful coating installation. Contractors who outsource or shortcut surface prep are setting the project up for failure. Ask what equipment they own, what preparation methods they use, and whether they perform moisture testing and surface profile verification.
3. What Products Do You Use and Why?
Professional contractors specify products based on your facility requirements, not on whatever is cheapest or whatever they have on the truck. Ask for product data sheets, chemical resistance charts, and a clear explanation of why they recommend a specific system for your application.
4. What Does Your Warranty Cover?
A warranty is only as good as the company standing behind it. Ask for details: What is covered? What is excluded? How long? Does it cover labor or just materials? A reputable contractor stands behind their work because they know it will perform.
5. Can You Work Within Our Schedule?
Commercial flooring installations often happen in operating facilities. The ability to phase work, install overnight or on weekends, and minimize disruption to your operations separates professional contractors from those who can only work on empty buildings.
6. Are You Licensed, Insured, and OSHA Compliant?
This should be non-negotiable. Verify general liability insurance, workers compensation coverage, and any required state licensing. Ask about their safety record and OSHA compliance history. One safety incident in your facility can cost more than the entire flooring project.
7. Can You Show Me Similar Completed Projects?
Photos, references, and site visits to completed projects tell you everything you need to know. A contractor who is proud of their work will happily show it off. If they cannot produce references or hesitate when asked, that tells you something too.
